Adding Dimension with Layering

Layering is a great technique to use on your scrapbook layouts, cards or special projects. Layering can be done in a variety of ways and can be used to add dimension to your pages. 

• Layer patterned paper over cardstock to make a visual “frame” around the edge of your layout
• Layer graduated sizes of cardstock as a mat to call attention to an important photo
• Layer letter stickers over parts of your photo or other elements of your page
• Layer embellishments such as stickers, buttons or ribbon over tags or chipboard shapes

In the "My Polynesian Paradise" layout above, I've used all of these techniques and while it's hard to tell from a photo, the layout has added visual interest because of these various layering techniques.

Design ideas using BasicGrey's Plumeria Collection

This week's featured designs are from FotoBella Design Team member, Nina. Nina used the new BasicGrey Plumeria - I Want It All! Full Collection Bundle to creatively showcase several different projects.

Plumeria is a gorgeous mix of delicate floral patterns, eye-catching geometrics and coordinating solids.  The patterns have a vintage feel using lavender, gold, purple and green with bursts of blue and orange throughout.

Nina has provided us with a great step-by-step outline to recreate her adorable Field of Flowers layout!

Field of Flowers

Supplies needed: Plumeria – I want it All! Full Collection Bundle

1.     Start by taking two sheets “Floweret” and “Budding Lavender. Use “Floweret” as the base.

2.     Take “Budding Lavender side B” and fussy cut some of the beautiful flower patterns, now place on base at the bottom to form a field of flowers.

3.     Take one of the layered trims (one with orange buttons) and place across the top of base.

4.     Take one of the transparencies (Wonderful Day) and place on upper right hand corner right under the layered trim.

5.     Using a flower punch, punch out three flowers using “Budding Lavendar side A” on one flower place an accordion sticker on top the other two place stickers and brads.

6.     Add a sticker for a stem and a chipboard sticker leaf to the large Accordion Sticker to form a flower.

7.     Place all four flowers at the bottom add picture to sit above the large flower.

8.     Decorate with butterfly stickers, brads, and sticker leafs randomly around the page.   

Tip: To make butterfly stickers look more dimensional only add glue right in the middle and lift wings.

Step by Step instructions for the Birthday Girls Layout

1. Use Bazzill Gray cardstock for the base of the layout.
2. Cut the Pink Bazzill cardstock 11" x 11" and mount it to the gray base.
3. Cut the Bazzill Dotted pattern paper to 10" x 10" and mount to the pink.
4. Mat the photo with white and gray cardstock and corner round the edges.
5. Die cut 2 doilies from Bazzill pink cardstock using the Lifestyle Crafts Antique Doily Die and place them under the left side of the photo.
6. Using a pink Bazzill Perfect Pleated ruffles, add it across the center of the layout.
7. Cut a 1/2" strip of the Bazzill Dotted pattern paper. Use the reverse side and place it across the ruffle.8. Add a die cut tag under the ruffle.
8. "GIRLS" was cut using the Lifestyle Crafts "Oh Happy Day" alphabet die using Bazzill Gray cardstock and was adhered on top of the ruffle.
9. Using a Die Cut Machine (Steph used the Cricut Expression) die cut the title from Bazzill Pink cardstock and Bazzill Floral pattern.
10. Adhere title across top of the layout, adding foam adhesives to the "B" for a little dimension.

I teach in my home studio as well as at my local Michaels and scrapbook store, teaching a variety of layout and card classes incorporating die cutting, stamping, embossing, etc. My day is just not complete if I haven't spent some time creating. I often don't start with a plan of what I'm going to create. I let the products I want to use "tell" me what they want to do. I love to "play" with my supplies and I try to teach that to everyone. If you don't spend time playing, then you have no idea of the full capabilities of your products and the fun stuff you'll be able to create.

This month's Bo Bunny I Want It All Membership - Ambrosia - Designs by Kristie

Every month FotoBella selects a new product line from Bo Bunny and shares fantastic bundles with our members.This month's Bo Bunny I Want It All membership bundle is Ambrosia.

This month Kristie from the FotoBella design team used this bundle to create all of these these beautiful designs. She has shared instructions for one of these layouts below.

 

Instructions for “Friends make the world a happy place” layout

Steps:

1. Cut a hand drawn bracket frame measuring 9”x11” from the green Bobunny paper. Place this to left side of page at an angle, leaving part hanging off the side of the page.

2. Cut another bracket frame at 6”x6” out of the rouge paper. Place this over the first raising slightly with some foam tape.

3. Cut a 2 ¼”x8” rectangle from the flower paper

4. Cut a 9 ½”x1 ½” strip from the circle paper, place these both to left side, keeping with the same angle as the bracket frames. Raise the flower one with foam tape.

5. Use a piece of purple cardstock (from my stash) to matte the photo. My photo is 4x6”, so my matte is 4 ¼”x6 ¼”.

6. Cut a 3”x4” piece of purple cardstock this goes to the right lower side of the photo

7. Cut a 3”x3”square from the flower paper this will go to the right lower of the photo, over the 3x3 piece

8. Using a border strip from the stickers, accordion fold it, then pull the fold out straight, when you stick it down try to keep some of the folds, this will give more dimension to you page.

9. Next make the flowers by using the “spiral circle” technique I found a link here: http://www.somewhatsimple.com/paper-flower-topiary-from-bits-of-me/ the only thing that I did different was I used a decorative edge scissors to cut mine.

10. Add all embellish from kit as shown, and sticker letters for title

Extras:

I used the side of my scissors to distress the edges of all of the papers, I added some doodling, and a scalloped circle punch for some pieces

I am Married to a David,(the love of my life) and we have four awesome kidlets, and a furbaby named Lilly. My wonderful family is usually the subject of my scrappy projects, I have even been known to make them dress to match a page I want to do - lol! I have been scrapbooking and playing with paper for about twelve years, and I just love it! I don't think my style fits into any certain description, but I think I would call it "shabbydistressed bling"

I love to get my hands dirty and often use inks, and paints on my scrapbook pages. I love to distress my paper to add more dimension, and of course you always need a little bling! While scrapbooking is my favorite artistic hobby, I also dabble in photography, art journaling and mixed media.
